Purple Ladder Studios

Purple Ladder Studios is a studio space in Digbeth, Birmingham. It provides a platform for artists and graduates to take the next step in their creative journeys and establish independent practices. The studio is multi-disciplinary, offering resources for everything from traditional printmaking to digital artwork. Founded for artists by artists, Purple Ladder Studios is a nurturing environment where creatives can come together, share ideas, and grow. It was created with the frustrations of being unable to reach your full creative potential due to a lack of space, supplies, and support in mind.
The client wanted a logo featuring a mascot. As it is a new studio, they wanted an eye-catching logo that attracts as many students as possible. They wanted the logo and mascot to have a friendly, approachable vibe, drawing inspiration from vintage cartoon characters like the Looney Tunes. I provided them with a few sketches of playful, vintage-inspired mascots and they believed the happy walking character best suited their vision.
They wanted the ‘Purple Ladder Studios’ logo in an arc shape right above the character to portray the roof of the actual studio. They also requested a tagline/quote, ‘everything you create matters’ to be welcoming and show immediate support to fresh graduates. I incorporated all of the desired elements in an aesthetically pleasing way to create a logo the clients were happy with.
For the color, I was inspired by the neighbourhood of the studio. The Purple Ladder Studio is located in Digbeth, the eclectic and vibrant heart of Birmingham’s creative district and home of the iconic Custard Factory. The space is primarily yellow, so to stand out, I chose its opposite color: purple. A color that also stands for creativity, it is the perfect choice for Purple Ladder Studios.
The client chose the font for the typography. Based on their selection, I created a social media template.
